WHERE ARE WE GOING?
WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO?
The answer is not the same for everyone, it depends a lot on each person and their tastes. Costa Rica is extremely diverse and has attractions for everyone.
I show you the most famous destinations.
Cerro de la Muerte
Definitely the area of San Gerardo is my favorite, in fact I chose it for my project. This is where I have my Mountain Hostel "The Sanctuary Retreat".
Is a must for birders, this area is the richest on endemic species of flora and fauna. It is very safe, the crime rate is the lowest in the country, There are few mosquitoes but there are no diseases related to them at this height, poisonous snakes are rare. Because is at more than 2500 meters above sea level, the temperature is pleasant in the day and cold at night, the sky is bluer, the air thinner, the vegetation is more woody and dark, the scenic beauty has waterfalls, lakes, view of the valleys and slopes, sometimes the clouds are lower than us.
I would call it The Alaska of Costa Rica.
Volcanoes
200 volcanic structures are calculated, but the most recent map of the Ovsicori only includes 112.
Some are inactive, others are dangerously active, for tourism we talk about volcanoes with spectacular and safe activity.
Irazú volcano is the highest. Arenal Volcano with its perfect cone, Poas has the largest crater (temporary closure by volcanic activity), Rincon de la Vieja has fumaroles and acid lagoons.
These are the ones that I recommend, in its surroundings you will find activities such as hot springs, canopy tours, trails, horseback riding, etc.
Beaches.
Honestly, if your plan is to go to a beach resort, eat, sleep, relax, maybe you don't need me, unless you want a security escort driver. But if you want to explore the jungles, look for wildlife, find hidden beaches, then you need me.
Costa Rica has two coasts and many beaches.
The Caribbean Coast has length of 212 km, (here is Tortuguero but I will make an album just for it) For safety I recommend Puerto Viejo and Cauita, (do not go alone). It is beautiful, the Afro-Caribbean culture is very rich and the indigenous are unique, some of the best food in the country, there is a lot of wildlife and stays green all year round.
The Pacific side has a length of 1,016 km, it is more touristy, in the area of Guanacaste are many beach resorts, in the dry season the trees lose their foliage, in the southern zone it is green all year round, it is famous for the sighting of whales and dolphins, (Corcovado is in the south but has its own album)
Bird watching
I studied ornithology at UCR, I like it a lot, Costa Rica has more than 850 species, and about 30% of the country are protected areas. I'm in heaven.
Different life zones, have diferent species,, so it is necessary to travel. Some of the most important places for bird watching are:
Palo Verde, dry forest and lagoon, it is possible to find jabiru, ducks and herons.
Sarapiqui, rainforest, there are green macaws, toucans, guans, ect.
Cerro de la Muerte, where there are highland endemic birds, already explained above.
Carara national park, located in the transitional zone between the dry forest of the north and the humid forest of the south, being able to find species of both forests, especially Scarlet Macaw.
Other excellent areas for bird watching are Los Chiles, Boca Tapada, San Vito, Osa, Monteverde.
There are iconic places known for their beauty, with tourisc development and famous worldwide:
Monteverde: Cloud forest has many activities to choose from, horseback riding, bird watching, nature tours, zip lines, trams, sky walking bridges, beautiful views, and much more.
Tortuguero, commonly called the Amazon of Costa Rica. You can take boat rides through the channels in search of wildlife, you will easily find monkeys, iguanas, snakes, birds. It means Land of turtles, you can take a tour to see the nesting of the turtles, but if this is your main interest, better go to Ostional in Guanacaste.
Corcovado, is the most biologically intense place on earth, with diversity and quantity of animals, the rainforest is gigantic, impressive. Access is difficult in some places, but the more difficult the bigger the prize is.
